The Florida Marlins squeaked to victory over the Philadelphia Phillies yesterday at Landshark Stadium with the Marlins earning the win 7 to 6. It was one heck of a game that devotees with Marlins tickets will definitely cherish.
Marlins pitcher Dan Meyer (2.96 ERA) got the win, while Brad Lidge (7.48 ERA) took the loss for the Phillies. Rick VandenHurk went 6 innings for the Marlins, allowed 7 hits, one home run and 4 earned runs with one walk and 5 strikeouts. Also pitching for the Marlins was Renyel Pinto (3.47), and Kiko Calero (1.89). The Phillies’s starter Cole Hamels went 7 innings, allowed 8 hits, 2 home runs and 4 earned runs with no walks and 4 strikeouts. Ryan Madson (3.33) also pitched for the Phillies. With the win, Meyer’s record goes to 3-1, while Lidge is at 0-8.
In addition to the 7 runs, the Marlins scored 13 hits and committed no errors. Jorge Cantu led the Marlins in hitting with 4 hits, followed by Cody Ross’s 2 hits, and Chris Coghlan with 2. The Phillies’s Ryan Howard had quite a day at the plate, batting in a stunning 4 runs! The Phillies didn’t have anyone with a big night with not one batter getting more than 2 hits. The Phillies got 6 runs, 9 hits and one error.
Umpiring duties were performed by Sam Holbrook, Mike Winters, Dan Iassogna and Larry Vanover. There were 31,042 Marlins ticket holders in attendance at Landshark Stadium.
The win puts the Marlins at a record of 82-71, (7 games behind the division leader), while the loss brings the Phillies to 88-63, at the top of their division.
