The Washington Nationals narrowly defeated the Philadelphia Phillies yesterday at Nationals Park with the Nationals coming out on top 8 to 7. Livan Hernandez went 7.1 solid innings for the Nationals, allowed 6 hits, no home runs and 2 earned runs with one walk and 2 strikeouts. Also pitching for the Nationals was Sean Burnett (2.88), Zach Segovia (81.00), and Mike MacDougal (3.55). The Phillies’s starter Joe Blanton went 4.2 innings, allowed 7 hits, 2 home runs and 8 earned runs with 4 walks and 4 strikeouts. Tyler Walker (1.71), Chad Durbin (4.73), and Brad Lidge (6.97) also pitched for the Phillies. With the win, Hernandez’s record goes to 8-10, while Blanton is at 9-7. Ron Villone earned the save for the Nationals, bringing his saves up to 1.
Ian Desmond provided much of the offense for the Nationals with an incredible 4 runs batted in. In addition to the 8 runs, the Nationals scored 9 hits and committed one error. It wasn’t a huge day for anyone at the plate for the Nationals, as nobody managed more than 2 hits. The Phillies’s Matt Stairs had quite a day at the plate, batting in a stunning 4 runs! The Phillies didn’t have anyone with a big night with not one batter getting more than 2 hits. The Phillies scored 7 runs, 11 hits and 2 errors.

The win puts the Nationals at a record of 48-92, (32 games behind the division leader), while the loss brings the Phillies to 79-59, at the top of their division.
